“You Should Write A Book!”

People say this all the time, don’t they?

It’s another way of complimenting someone – whether it’s on their storytelling ability, their sense of humour, the crazy adventures they’ve told you about – “you should write a book” is another way of saying “I like hearing what you have to say”.

Whether they intend for you to take it seriously is another question.

I’ve had a fair few people tell me I should write a book. Some say it’s because of the humour and honesty in this blog, others because they think what I write will help others. The vast majority haven’t told me exactly why I should write a book, just that I should. Whether they intended for me to take that seriously – I don’t know.

Still, I’m the sort of person who loves subverting people’s expectations (see the whole “getting pregnant at nineteen” thing for proof of that), so – regardless of whether they intended for me to or not – I took their advice and I wrote a book.

And now, here it is – available to buy for your Kindle, Kindle Fire or the free, easy-to-download Kindle Reading App on smartphones and tablets!

How crazy is that? I’ve now officially written a book. It’s a little bit bonkers but hey – 2016 is my year of doing big, crazy, fun, scary things, and it doesn’t get much bigger/crazier/scarier/fun-er(?) than becoming an author!

I am so nervous, as I have no idea what the reception to the book will be, but I really hope that if you do buy it, you enjoy it!

And of course, thank you to all you lovely people who read my blog and comment and like and chat to me on Twitter and all of you who’ve ever told me I should write a book – whether you meant it or not, it’s done now and there’s no going back!

How did you go about, what tips do you have for someone who has also been asked to write a book? Mine isn’t blogging related at all, it’s on a subject of history I have an interest in, but all tips relevant I imagine!

I’ve gone down the Kindle Direct Publishing route. Top tips for writing is to get a little bit done every day – every bit of progress spurs you on! Make sure you’re writing about something you love and something you’re passionate about, spell check like a pro, get other people to read it as you go along to make sure the tone seems right. Some people plan out every single chapter but I just sat there with a notebook, jotted down every point I wanted to make, turned those points into chapters and whacked it all together! Hope this helps, best of luck with your book! x
